Why enroll in this Deckhand course?
If you’re considering a career on a yacht, this course offers a cost-effective way to gain fundamental insights into deck work and become an integral part of the Yachts Crew. It demonstrates to yacht recruiters your commitment to pursuing a deckhand position and equips you with the necessary skills under the guidance of our highly qualified instructors.
What will you learn in the Deckhand course?
This course covers essential deckhand skills, including Seamanship, Knot Tying, Mooring/Anchoring Operations, Basics of Navigation, Safety, and Communications. We provide guidance on the deckhand application process, setting you on the path to becoming a proficient deckhand.
Additionally, we strongly recommend taking the required STCW basic training and designated security duties course. Our blended basic training combines online courses with 2 days of practical sessions for a comprehensive learning experience.
The Navigational Watch Rating (NWR) certificate is increasingly becoming a prerequisite for deckhands on ships adhering to commercial or passenger yacht codes. Earning the NWR involves showcasing advanced deck skills and completing specific watchkeeping tasks, positioning you as a valuable crew member. This certification not only communicates your dedication to your role but also signals to the Captain and agencies your commitment to advancing your career and gaining further experience. It serves as an official record of your experience, transferable from ship to ship throughout your maritime career.
The course holds recognition from all yacht flag registries and is equivalent to the Yacht rating certificate, boasting the added benefit of international recognition (STCW). Under the guidance of our highly qualified team of instructors, who are Master Mariners, you’ll gain professional STCW certification, globally acknowledged, and a 4-month sea time credit applicable to the next deck level. This certification has no restrictions based on ship size, and hands-on training is conducted using our state-of-the-art ship simulator, featuring models from Superyachts to Cruise Ships.
For a comprehensive competency in pursuing a deckhand position, we strongly recommend complementing this course with the 2-day deckhand workshop and the STCW Basic Training (2-day blended course). Combining these courses offers a 20% discount on the blended course when booked alongside the STCW Deckhand (rating) course.
Does this training confer formal qualifications? Yes, you will attain the STCW Deck Navigation watch rating qualification, also known as the rating forming part of a navigation watch. This credential enables career progression, allowing you to work on all commercial ships and support the watch in an official capacity. With the current requirement for large ships to carry a safe manning document, this qualification positions you as part of the safe manning.
What does the Deckhand course cover? The course covers seamanship, emergency operations, mooring/anchoring operations, rules of the road (ship collision avoidance), safety and pollution regulations, lifesaving appliances, practical steering, compass work, internal communications and terminology, lookout duties, and correct reporting.
Advantages compared to the conventional yacht rating course: Besides gaining skills in supporting mooring/anchoring and lifesaving operations, you’ll become acquainted with bridge operations, instilling confidence in the Captain regarding your abilities from the moment you step on the gangway. This certification serves as a stepping stone to further advance your career, working towards an Officer of the Watch License. The course is facilitated by the most experienced Master Mariners with extensive experience in large yachts and commercial ships.
Entry Requirements: Minimum age of 16 years.
